Kazuhide Uchida
内田 和秀

Uchida’s ceramic practice is deeply rooted in his formative years training at a traditional Bizen pottery kiln, where wood-fired kilns are kept burning continuously for nearly two weeks. During this period, he was often responsible for tending the kiln through the night, feeding wood into the fire from midnight until dawn. The quiet transition from darkness to first light left a lasting impression on him, and the atmosphere of those contemplative hours continues to inform his work today.

A distinctive feature of Uchida’s ceramics is his exploration of blue. Through years of experimentation, he developed his own glaze formulas, carefully adjusting cobalt and manganese to achieve the depth and complexity of color that has become a signature of his work.

Rather than starting with sketches or detailed drawings, Uchida works directly with the clay, carving and refining the surface as the piece takes shape. His geometric patterns emerge organically through this process, often drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese motifs.
