Chisato Taniguchi
たにぐち ちさと
She initially began her artistic practice in ceramics, creating works from clay using the traditional kakiotoshi (sgraffito) technique with black slip decoration. Later, she stepped away from ceramics and worked as an assistant to her husband, a glass artist, while also developing and exhibiting her own glass works.
In 2020, she returned to ceramics with a desire to explore new techniques and modes of expression. This led her to “Pierced Porcelain with Translucent Glaze”, a technique in which delicate openings are carved into white clay and filled with transparent colored glaze. When illuminated, the surface allows light to pass through, creating a luminous effect. Drawing upon her experience in glass, she incorporates a refined sense of color, transparency, and light into her ceramic practice.
Her works are inspired by fleeting impressions and memories of the natural world—rainfall observed in childhood, the movement of wind, and the silhouettes of bare winter trees. Through these forms and patterns, she seeks to transform these lingering visual memories into poetic ceramic expressions.
